Workplace Conduct Policies

The University of California Riverside is committed to equitable treatment of all students, faculty, and staff. UCR's faculty, staff, and students are committed to creating an environment in which each person has the opportunity to grow and develop, and is recognized for their contribution.

There are three objectives that our campus must strive toward in order to achieve these goals. •

  • First, we must ensure that we have an environment that nurtures the intellectual and personal growth of our students, faculty and staff.
  • Second, we must ensure that our campus sets an example of respect for all people.
  • Third, we must ensure that our campus is a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

The following policies aim to support and meet those objectives.

Abusive Conduct in the Workplace
UC Policy


UC is committed to promoting and maintaining a healthy working environment in which every individual is treated with respect. This policy addresses the University’s responsibilities and procedures related to Abusive Conduct and Retaliation for reporting, or participating in, an investigation or other process provided for in this policy.

California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA)
UC Policy

The California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (“CANRA”), codified at California Penal Code §§ 11164-11174.3, requires that employers of Mandated Reporters (as defined in the Act) promote identification and reporting of child abuse or neglect.
UCR Policy

UCOP implemented a policy for reporting known or suspected abuse and neglect of children on all UC campuses and medical centers. Such reporting has been a matter of law in California for certain UC faculty and staff (Mandated Reporters) based upon defined professions and roles. The law was amended effective January 1, 2013 to include a broader group of Mandated Reporters. The policy is intended to ensure that the University is in compliance with the law, and moreover to require that Mandated Reporters also make internal reports to ensure the University’s leadership is promptly made aware of known or suspected abuse of children on our campuses.
 Guidance on Abusive Conduct and Bullying in the Workplace
UCR Policy

The University of California is committed to providing a safe, supportive, responsive and equitable environment for all employees. The University strives to be a leader as an employer and to foster a positive working environment. In furtherance of these goals and the University’s anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policies, all UC community members are expected to behave in ways that support UC’s Principles of Community and Regents Policy 1111 (Statement of Ethical Values and Standards of Ethical Conduct), which states that UC is committed to treating each member of the University community with respect and dignity.

Employment Related Discrimination, Harassment and Retaliation Compliant and Resolution
UCR Policy

The University of California (UC) prohibits discrimination or harassment on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion (including religious dress and grooming practices), sex, gender, gender expression, gender identity, gender transition status, pregnancy, physical or mental disability, medical condition (cancer-related or genetic characteristics), genetic information (including family medical history), ancestry, marital status, age, sexual orientation, citizenship, or service in the uniformed services, including protected veterans.

University policy prohibits retaliation for bringing a complaint of discrimination or harassment. University policy also prohibits retaliation against a person who assists with a complaint of discrimination or harassment, or participates in any manner in an investigation or resolution of a complaint of discrimination or harassment. 

The UCR Office of Title IX, Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action (Title IX/EOAA) is responsible for supporting UCR’s commitment to non-discrimination and equal opportunity.

Consensual Intimate (Sexual or Romantic) Relationships in the Workplace
UCR Policy

UCR committed to maintaining a workplace (including associated teaching, research, working and athletic environments) free from conflicts of interest, favoritism, and exploitation. This policy addresses romantic relationships and/or sexual interactions that, although consensual, may create actual and perceived conflicts of interests, and create the possibility for exploitation or favoritism.
Electronic Communications
UC Policy

The University of California encourages the use of electronic communications to share information and knowledge in support of the University's mission of education, research and public service and to conduct the University's business. To this end, the University supports and provides interactive electronic communications services and facilities for telecommunications, mail, publishing, and broadcasting.
UCR Policy

The University of California, Riverside (UC Riverside) has a responsibility to comply with federal, state, and applicable local laws, rules, and procedures regarding the preservation of documents, whether electronic or in any other form, in connection with legal disputes. This policy, which applies to all faculty and staff, addresses the rules on preserving Electronically Stored Information (ESI) relevant to current or potential litigation or other legal disputes.

UC Policy

In that spirit, the Standards of Ethical Conduct are a statement of our belief in ethical, legal and professional behavior in all of our dealings inside and outside the University.

Principles of Community/Senate Bill 108
UCR Policy

The University of California Riverside is committed to equitable treatment of all students, faculty, and staff. UCR's faculty, staff, and students are committed to creating an environment in which each person has the opportunity to grow and develop, and is recognized for their contribution.

The Chancellor's memo regarding the California Legislature requires the University of California system to maintain consistency of implementation and enforcement of these policies reinforces UCR's principles of community and values and encourages a healthy, thriving campus climate for all members of our UC community.

Protection of Administrative Records Containing Personally Identifiable Information
UC Policy

The University is committed to protecting personal privacy in its operations, activities, and management of information and has established policies providing guidance on the systemwide processes for safeguarding personally identifiable information in Administrative Records. When Personally Identifiable Information is requested, the University must examine whether its disclosure or use is governed by law, University policy or contract, and if not, whether disclosure or use constitutes an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy.
Smoke and Tobacco Free Environment
UC Policy

As a public institution of higher education with units that research and treat the effects of smoking, tobacco and marijuana use, the University of California (UC) recognizes its responsibility to exercise leadership in the promotion of a healthy, smoke/tobacco-free environment for all students, academic appointees, staff, and visitors. This Presidential Policy and associated procedures are intended to provide a healthier, safer, and more productive work and learning environment for the entire UC community.

The policy and associated procedures are intended to provide a healthier, safe and productive work and learning environment for the entire campus community. UC Riverside is committed to a healthy campus culture and environment.
Substance Abuse
UC Policy

The University strives to maintain campus communities and worksites free from the illegal use, possession, or distribution of alcohol or of controlled substances, as defined in schedules I through V of the Controlled Substances Act, 2i United States Code §812, and by regulation at 21 Code of Federal Regulations §1308. Unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensing, possession, use, or sale of alcohol or of controlled substances by University employees and students in the workplace, on University premises, at official University functions, or on University business is prohibited..

All Institutions of Higher Education (IHE), which receive federal financial assistance, are required to establish a drug and alcohol abuse prevention program and provide an annual substance abuse notice to all students and employees. This policy prohibits the unlawful manufacture, sale, distribution, possession or use of controlled substances and alcohol on university property or at official functions.

UC Policy

This Policy addresses the University’s responsibilities and procedures related to sexual violence, sexual harassment, retaliation, and other prohibited behavior as those terms are defined in this Policy (together, “Prohibited Conduct”) in order to ensure an equitable and inclusive education and employment environment. The Policy defines Prohibited Conduct and explains the administrative procedures the University uses to resolve reports of Prohibited Conduct.

This policy describes the complaint resolution process that is available to employees and applicants for employment who believe they have been subjected to retaliation as a result of having made a Protected Disclosure or refused to obey an Illegal Order.
